8 Daily Affirmations

Blank-Sheet.jpg

Sometimes it’s tough to “stay positive.”

Some days it’s easier to stay in bed rather than face reality.

Sometimes you just want to grab a tub of ice cream and stay on the couch and watch the Harry Potter series all day.

Okay, it may not be Harry Potter for you. Maybe it’s Disney movies or Real Housewives of Atlanta. And maybe it’s not ice cream for you. Maybe it’s pizza or candy. My point is that it’s hard to stay positive every single day.

Zig Ziglar once said, “People often say that motivation doesn't last. Well, neither does bathing - that's why we recommend it daily.”

How you start your day is extremely important. And what you tell yourself each day shapes the direction of your life. If you can think positively on a consistent basis, you will train your mind to find the good in every moment, even the moments when it seems impossible to do so.

I decided to hit up my lady and compile a list of the daily affirmations that help us get through our days.

With that being said,

Let’s get into it !

1)   I WILL - Get up and show up

You’re going to have to pay your dues.  Anything worth having is going to take time to get which means there are going to be times when your emotions get the best of you.  Some days you’ll be more tired than others; some days you won’t feel as creative or as productive as other days.  But no matter how you feel, pick yourself up and show up for that day.  Whatever tasks you have to tackle, find the strength to make it happen.  Get it done.  Because one thing I’ve realized is that the days you don’t feel like doing something are the days when you probably need to do it the most, especially if it’s going to get you closer to your dreams, goals and aspirations.  Do your best not to count the days; focus on making each day count.

2). I am IMPORTANT

Do you know you’re here for a reason?  Every single person on this planet has a purpose, including you!  Yes, YOU.  You may not feel like it.   You may not know what it is.  But I need you to understand, and I mean REALLY understand, that you are important. You are here to accomplish something no one else in this world can accomplish.  The very fact that you are alive right now reading this means God is not finished with you yet.  You matter. I don’t care what anyone else has told you, or even what you’ve told yourself.  From this second moving forward, I need you to know you are special. SO special.  There are gifts, talents, visions, ideas, goals, and dreams inside of you ready to unfold.  Take the time to figure out what they are.  Please!  The world needs what you have to offer.

3). I MUST – Breathe

Sometimes we forget to breathe.  You might say, “How do we forget to breathe when that’s literally what gives us oxygen?”  What I mean is that we breathe for survival but not always to analyze our next move.  Oftentimes, life can become a lot to handle.  Oftentimes, life has a grip on us and we’re just trying to hold on, just trying to keep our heads above water and catch our breath.  I’ve realized that in the midst of these chaotic moments, if we can find a way to breathe, we eventually calm down and can figure out a solution to our problems.  It’s kind of like quicksand.  The more you fight, the quicker you sink.  But if you calm down, it takes the sand longer to overtake you. Don’t let life overtake you.  Take a deep breath, analyze the root of your problem, shift your perspective, and find a solution.

4). I am LOVED

Another way to say this affirmation is, “I love myself.”  Self-love is crucial.  CRUCIAL. You cannot receive or give love to others until you first learn to love yourself.  How do you fall in love with yourself?  By working on the second affirmation- I am important.  If you repeatedly remind yourself that God has a plan for your life; that you are here for a reason; that there is greatness inside of you; that you are amazing and special; that YOU ARE IMPORTANT, your self-love will slowly begin to grow and grow.  You can tell when you REALLY love yourself because everything about you changes. Your swag is different.  Your confidence is on a whole other level. You talk different.  You walk different.  You don’t care what other people think about you.  You don’t need compliments from other people to feel good about yourself.  You don’t need likes and comments under your Instagram posts to feel validated.  You don’t settle for less than what you deserve. You eliminate the people and things in your life that are distracting you from your purpose.  Because when you fall in love with yourself, you realize you deserve to live the BEST life you could possibly live.  Mannnnnn, let me tell you.  Do not take this affirmation lightly!  Work on it until you start to see some changes.  Self-love is not going to happen overnight, but it is SO worth the process.

5). I WILL - Fully commit to it

I’ve always been a forward thinker.  I’m always thinking long term, which has its advantages and disadvantages.   One advantage is that I can see my vision very clearly.  The dream. The final product.   I see it as clear as day.  It’s so clear I can grab it!  However, the disadvantage to this is that I often overlook certain steps.

I don’t believe starting is the hard part.  I think having the right emotional state and the right people around you will give you the boost you need to start whatever it is you want to do.   The hard part is finishing.  It’s hard to finish anything.  Not because we can’t, but because when we embark on a journey, life has a way of happening.  The moment you make up your mind to do something, life is going to test you to see how bad you really want it.   And it’s not always easy to fight when you have no fight left in you.  It’s not always easy to get back up when you’ve had countless setbacks.

Doubt and fear are always near us.  But you owe it to yourself to see how far you can go in this life, not for anybody else but yourself. You need to finish whatever it is that you’re doing.   It’s not even about the destination.  It’s about who you are as a person day in and day out.  Your character will always overshadow whether you reach it to the top or not.  I’ve climbed many mountains and fell short on a bunch of them.   But no matter how many times I fall short, I’ll never stop climbing.  I owe it to myself to finish whatever it is that I start. I dare you to finish. I dare you! See it all the way through, and watch what it does to your character along the way.

6). I am STRONG

“But Chanelle, I don’t feel strong.”  I get it. Trust me.  I get it!  Life has a way of making us feel weak.  Tragedy, disappointment, pain, suffering, trial, tribulation- we all experience difficult circumstances.  And sometimes the burden feels too heavy to carry.  Job loss, a death in the family, a bad health diagnosis, financial hardship, marital problems, a disobedient child- the list of challenges we experience is endless.  But guess how I know you’re strong?  Because you’re here right now reading this.  When life knocked you down, you got back up.  Being strong doesn’t mean you won’t ever fall.  Being strong doesn’t mean you won’t ever feel like quitting.  The true sign of strength is getting up when everything in you wants to throw in the towel. The next time life throws you a curveball and you don’t know how you’re going to make it through, remind yourself of all the things in your life you’ve overcome.  You’ve gotten stronger and stronger because of everything you’ve been through.  Your strength is at a higher level than it was a few years ago, a few months ago, a few weeks ago, even a few days ago.  Stop believing the lies that you’re too weak to get through whatever you’re facing, that you can’t handle anymore hardship.  You CAN and you WILL.

7). I MUST - Do better when I know better

I remember when I finished university at 22, and I had just written my first book.  After I got the physical copy of the book and saw all the mistakes in it, I thought, “Wow, I had no idea what I was doing.”  See, I didn’t get a professional editor.  I was trying to save money so I went with someone I knew had been an English teacher for decades.  Even though she did a good job editing my book, she didn’t have that professional eye for book editing, and that showed in my end product.

For my second book, I hired a professional editor, and the result was a night and day difference.  All I did was make one small adjustment, and it made a huge impact.  Am I a genius?  Heck no.   I just learned from my experience.  I knew better, so I made a better choice.  It’s okay to make mistakes.  It’s okay to get it wrong.  We’re human. That’s going to happen.  Very few times do we ever get it right the first time.   Don’t take it to heart.  Progress with the knowledge you have.  Make better decisions with the lessons you’ve learned.  Once you know better, do better.

8). I am BEAUTIFUL

This affirmation is a little cheesy, but it’s one of my favorite, probably because it’s the one I struggle with most.  I have a hard time looking myself in the mirror and saying, “I am beautiful.” Like most people, when I look in the mirror, I focus on my flaws.  I focus on everything about myself I wish was different.  But recently I got fed up with myself.  “Chanelle, wishing you could change certain things about yourself is such a waste of time.  You are beautiful just the way you are.”  And I’m going to tell you the same thing:  You are beautiful just the way you are! It’s hard for us to recognize our own beauty because we are constantly comparing how we look to how other people look.   Nowadays, the comparison trap is so easy to fall into with social media.  It’s SO important to remember that another person’s beauty is not the absence of your own beauty.  And, this may sound a little cliché, but true beauty is found within.  A woman can be the most beautiful person in the world on the outside, but if she has a nasty personality, she’s ugly in my book.  Imagine a young boy coming up to you and asking, “Why am I so ugly.”  What would you say?   I imagine you would tell him he’s not ugly, that everyone is beautiful in their own special way, and that true beauty is determined by how you treat others.  I think it’s time for all of us to start taking our own advice.

Maybe you have some affirmations of your own. I would love to hear about them and see what type of thoughts get you through each day. Feel free to leave a comment below and let me know!

8 Tips to Start The New Year Right

Yeah.

So…

Okay,

I don’t really have an intro…let’s just get into it.

2002.jpg

1)  Don’t say, “New year, new me.”

Chances are if you’ve said this, in about a month or so you’ll probably go back to the old you.  Don’t be ashamed.  Just acknowledge this truth and find a way to fix it.

Fixing it:  FULLY commit to your goal for the new year.  It’s important to commit to it even on the days you don’t feel like it. It’s not always about what you feel like doing; it’s about committing to what you said you were going to do long after that good, motivating feeling is gone. Motivation doesn’t last but habits do.

2)  Do something you didn’t do last year.

Oftentimes we can catch ourselves saying, “I’ll do it tomorrow, or in a few days, or in a few weeks or months.”  It’s hard to get ahead if you keep putting it off until “tomorrow.”

Fixing it:  I know it can be tough sometimes, but just be courageous TODAY and do something different.  Start today. Focus on the now, on this present moment.  Then tomorrow, take a deep breath and find that same courage.  And then find it again the day after that.  The time is now, and there is no time like the present to start something new.  In order to get somewhere, you have to leave somewhere. Get out into the unknown and leave the comfort!

3)  This is my year!

Last year wasn’t your year.  Or the year before that.  But this year!!!  Oh baby, this is the year.  I feel it!

Fixing it:  All it takes is a few small things to work in your favor to build that momentum. Once that momentum builds, you’ll start to get some wins in areas you probably didn’t think you would get just yet. That’s all success is- a lot of small wins stacked on top of each other.  You never know when things will come together, but no matter what, you must believe that your time and year is this present one because it is!  If not this year, then best believe 2020 is the one! Expect that breakthrough, believe in that breakthrough, claim that breakthrough.  You don’t have to tell the world, but you have to tell yourself.

4)  Know the difference between a need and a want.

It’s not always about what you want.  Everybody wants something, but do you need it? How do you know the difference?

Fixing it:  A need is something you cannot live without.  A want is something that will bring you instant joy & temporary happiness (that’s kinda deep and I wasn’t even trying to be).   Needs require a budget.  Wants have no expiration date. A need involves prioritizing your focus; a want involves how big your eyes get when you look at it. Put it this way, if you take care and focus on what you need right now, you’ll have what you want in due time, and probably in abundance because you taught yourself discipline.

5)  Re-evaluate your circle.

Every year there is a meme that says, “If I don’t reply to you, I left you in last year,” (some of the memes are actually kind of funny). It’s not always about cutting people off; it’s about making sure those you surround yourself with aren’t just taking from your energy but are also adding to it.  Sometimes you have to make sure everyone in your circle is on the same page as you.

Fixing it: Priorities change, you change, your goals and motivation change.  That’s called growth.  As an individual grows, so do certain things in his or her life.  We are a new person every single year which means we should raise our standards.  Oftentimes, when this happens, people naturally drift out of our live, and that’s okay.  Never apologize for growing into your full potential and having to leave some people behind, no matter who they are.

Everybody wants to ride the wagon up the hill until the wheel falls off.  That’s when you’ll find out who’s there to help you push and who’s just there for the transportation.

6)  Get your nutrition right.

For real.  Don’t play with your body.  Amazon and ebay don’t sell bodies.  Trust me, I’ve checked.  You only get one body.  Just one! So take care of it.  If you take care of your body at the beginning stages of your life, your future body will thank you.

Fixing it:  Drink water, eat your veggies (broccoli won’t kill you).  Get that exercise in, even if you’re not really into exercising.  Just go for a walk.  You’d be surprised how good for your joints just plain walking is.  Don’t wait until it’s too late to realize you should have taken better care of yourself.  Exercise and nutrition are in your control.  Take control of them.

7)  Don’t let your past keep you trapped.

“This is how my family has always done it. And this is probably how I’m going to do it.”  There’s nothing wrong with that.  But what if that’s not what’s best for you?

Fixing it:  Going against the grain is always tough. It’s not always comfortable or ideal, especially to those who know you well. (Quick story time!)

A few years ago, I was talking to an individual that I will call Achilles, and the conversation went like this:

Achilles:  Man, I don’t even like what I’m majoring in at school.

Akeem:  You wait until 3 months before you graduate to have these thoughts?  Why’d you choose that major?

Achilles:  I know right. Because my parents are engineers and so is my brother.  It only makes sense.

Akeem:  I get it. It’s in the family. S what’re you going to do?

Achilles:  I’m going to finish, and then I’ll probably find a job in that field for a year, and then I’ll quit.  What would you do?

Akeem:  Well, you should probably take some time and figure out what you really want to do.  Whatever you do, just don’t half-ass it.  People never forget a hard worker.

Achilles:  Yeah, that’s a good point. I’ll take some time to figure it out these next few months. You tryna go to Dairy Queen this week, though?

I heard Jim Carey once say, “You can fail at doing something you don’t like to do, so why not take a chance on doing something that you love to do?”

8) Unwavering faith.

Faith is believing in something you cannot see.  Faith is finding a reason to keep going even when you can’t see the path.  Faith is practicing your craft every single day when you don’t know when that opportunity might come.  Faith is wiping your tears and smiling at the same time.  Faith is understanding things will get worse before they get better.  Faith is encouraging others when you need encouragement yourself.  Faith is being positive when you don’t see anything to be positive about.  Faith is believing your breakthrough is just around the corner when the corners aren’t very wide.  Faith is believing God is working in your favor when it feels like He’s forgotten about you.

If you are reading this today, I am praying for you.  I hope this is the year you’ve been praying for.  I hope this is the year the seeds you planted will start to bear fruit.  I hope this is the year generational cycles are broken and a new generational cycle begins.

I hope today is the day that it starts.
